Historic Resources Survey Project

On Thursday, March 1, 2018 at 6:00 p.m. the Town of Cheraw will host a public forum to kick-off its historic resources survey project in Town Hall’s Courtroom, 200 Market Street. The public is encouraged to participate. The Town is working with Brockington and Associates, Inc. to update its historic resource survey. This effort is funded through a grant from the South Carolina Department of Archives & History. The survey is an evaluation of the Town’s Historic District and surrounding properties for their cultural, archaeological, historical, and architectural significance.

The goals are to:

  • Capture changes that have occurred since the previous survey in 1990;
  • Identify structures that now qualify for the survey;
  • Develop a report highlighting findings/recommendations to help further preservation planning, and promote economic incentives for rehabilitation, heritage tourism, education, and compliance; and,
  • Capture data in digital formats.

Brockington’s staff, in the coming days, will be canvassing the Historic District and several areas taking pictures and gathering data. Evaluated will be structures, complexes, sites, and design landscapes. Attention will be placed on properties at least 50 years old or will become 50 years of age within the next ten years. Data gathering and pictures will be captured from the public right-of-way.

No data collection will require Brockington’s staff to enter your home or linger on your property.
